About
I’m a cinematography and marine biology student at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, currently working as photos editor for Ka Leo—the university’s long-standing newspaper. My work there includes covering local and campus events, as well as sports.
My passion for the ocean and photography began early—I grew up keeping aquariums and started taking photos as a kid. By high school, I was seriously pursuing photography, with the long-term goal of capturing marine life in its natural habitat.
Along the way, I found a niche in live music photography. Over the past three years, I’ve photographed performances in Honolulu at venues and festivals including Holo Holo, The Republik, The Secret Spot, and of course UH Mānoa. I’ve had the opportunity to capture photos of artists such as Kanaka Fyah, Twin Fin, The Green, Johnny Suite, Wavvy, Natural Vibrations, more recently Small Axe! You can check out those photos on my insta @alecphotoz. These experiences have allowed me to connect with more artists, managers, and venues while honing my craft in fast-paced, dynamic environments.
My roots tie back to the Seattle music scene. Some of my early work came from venues and festivals including THING, The Neptune Theatre, Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley, and The Black Lodge.
Music has always been a passion, something I shared with my dad through classic rock and the Seattle grunge scene, and later as a guitarist myself. Now, I channel that energy into visual storytelling, capturing the raw emotion and intensity of live performance.
